Student mental health screening is a critically important element of a school-based suicide prevention. Screening educates students about mental health symptoms they may be experiencing and encourages help-seeking for themselves or a friend. But taking the first step toward screening students requires an informed, thoughtful approach. Join us for a one-hour webinar as we explore the power of screening as part SOS Signs of Suicide. We will discuss data collected from key partners conducting either anonymous or identified screening with large populations of students, best practices in scoring screening forms and following up with youth, and how to address the common concerns we hear about screening students.

This webinar, hosted by the SOS Team, offers an overview of new resources and tools you can use to engage your school community. Attendees will view the following materials which have been added to the portal over the past school year:

• Faculty/staff training PowerPoint
• Faculty/staff Knowledge Check
• Parent training PowerPoint
• New supplemental lesson plans

The SOS team will also speak to upcoming changes such as all new program videos.

The SOS curriculum is delivered through a 25-minute video and guided discussion that teaches students how to identify warning signs of suicide and depression in a single class period. At the end, students are encouraged to take a screening for depression which enables the school to identify students who are at risk. The curriculum raises awareness about behavioral health in youth and encourages students to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) when worried about themselves or their peers. The webinar will also review how schools can involve faculty/staff and parents in the program’s universal approach. Learn how SOS can help your school with suicide prevention efforts.
